SEAMO- South Asian Mathematical Olympiad- an Interesting Platform to Expose Young Minds to Maths

We do live in a competitive world, don’t we? And in such a world, do you want to give your child that competitive edge? Then here is an Olympiad with a difference. The SEAMO- SOUTHEAST ASIAN MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD- is an interesting platform to expose young minds and identify mathematical talent, by giving creative challenges. The Olympiad provides competition at the highest level, though in a friendly way. SEAMO provides resources for students of various levels to hone their problem-solving skills and to prepare for more challenging competitions in the future.

Background of SEAMO

SEAMO is a concept originating from Singapore. The whole platform was conceptualized and developed by noted mathematician and experts of Terry Chew Institute of Mathematical Olympiad (TCIMO). This institute, established in 1991, TCIMO has been engaged in path breaking research in designing mathematical questions to assess a child’s inherent and problem solving skills. It encourages all categories of students to think on the solution approach to a problem. Last year, more than 40,000 students appeared in SEAMO across 12 Asian countries viz Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Jakarta, Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste. This year, SEAMO would give Indian students to compete with international students of South East Asia and for the first time it would be held in India across 55 cities and in more than 100 test centres.

A Glimpse into the Olympiad

SEAMO is for student of class V to XII. It tests analytical and logical thinking, with a problem solving approach for a student. SEAMO encourages “High Order Thinking” ability of a child & recommends a learning style through a personalized report.

Key features of SEAMO

  • There would be relative evaluation- students will be able to benchmark their performance w.r.t. others, through National Rank and International Rank.
  • A performance analysis report to identify their weaknesses and improve upon them.
  • Progressive Improvement tracking opportunity for students to appear in SEAMO every year and benchmark their performance w.r.t. previous year.
  • Rewards · Gold plated medal & certificate for top 0.025% of students; Silver plated medal & certificate for next 1% of students; Bronze plated medal & certificate for next 2% of students; Participation certificate for all for all students.

The exam pattern

SEAMO Exam Structure would carry a total of 24 Questions. They are grouped into sections- SECTION – 1 with 8 easy questions; SECTION – 2 with 8 moderate questions and SECTION – 3 with 8 difficult questions. Students would get an average 4-5 minutes per question. This implies that a student has to think deeply, to arrive at a solution to the problem.

How can one register?

There are 2 modes of registration. In the offline mode, students can fill up the form through their respective school along with the registration fees. Otherwise one could submit the filled in form at the nearest registration office mentioned in the brochure. In the online mode, students can visit the official website –, fill up the online registration form and submit the registration fees.

Ranking of students

In SEAMO, the question paper for all countries including India will be prepared together hence the experts of SEAMO will maintain parity in terms of difficulty level. Students get 2 kinds of Rank (National & International); so they are benchmarked w.r.t other students in India & Abroad.

Must your child opt for it?

SEAMO encourages all categories of students to experience, assess their skill base and benchmark their performance. Unlike other Olympiads, where only the best student progress to the next level, SEAMO encourages all categories of students to participate. It is a good platform to help your child understand his/her caliber.
