When a book puts together life’s simplest pleasures, you can be sure that it’s going to be one great read. To kick start the week ahead, here is a book that’s worth a pick- Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella. After a rather dull weekend, I needed a book that wasn’t too heavy, to pull me out of the slump. And this book came as the perfect read. It was light-hearted, honest and made me smile too. I just adored the portrayal of the characters and the narrative right till the end.
Can You Keep a Secret is Sophie Kinsella’s finest. This chick lit author is most popularly known for her Shopaholic series. Can You Keep a Secret was her first stand-alone novel, that was published by Dial Press Trade Paperback in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2003
Emma Corrigan is just like any other girl out there
Working as a marketing assistant at Panther Cola, she is hoping to climb the corporate ladder, expecting to be promoted soon. Yet, disappointments are a plenty, when the first marketing deal with a client goes all wrong. On a turbulent flight from Glasgow to London, Emma ends up spilling the beans about her life- her discomfort with G-strings, her dislike for the office coffee, her feelings towards her best friend, relationship with her boyfriend and many other intimate details, to a complete stranger seated by her side. When the flight lands, Emma hopes she would never ever meet the stranger again, only to discover that the young man on the plane is none other than Jack Harper, the CEO of her company.
Embarrassed and overcome with a strange sense of unease, Emma prays Jack would forget it all. However, Jack is hell bent on knowing more about her. He convinces her that he is a better choice as a boyfriend. Despite ending up going on a date, Jack seldom shares details about himself. Yet, Emma is drawn to him, and finds herself falling in love with him. That’s when it all goes wrong. In a television interview, Jack ends up revealing Emma’s secrets, and things aren’t the same again between them.
Can You Keep a Secret is a lovely chick-lit that is not entirely about romance
The book is fun and playful with shades of fear, rejection and love experienced by Emma. I loved the irresistible spirit of Emma Corrigan, and the suave and classy nature of Jack. Sophie portrays issues of an everyday girl- times spent with roommates, squabbles with family members, and office gossips. Can You Keep a Secret is worth your time! It’s a book that’s filled with comedy, romance and tons and tons of secrets.
*The book is available on Amazon in paperback as well as in Kindle format.
